RMIT University, Industrial Design (Year 2) [With Leyan Jin, Guo Wei Yuan & Chenjing Ji] This assignment focuses on the development of a new design business concept, working in small groups to identify a unique mode of practice and a sector with growth opportunities. The goal is to conduct in-depth sector and market analysis, identify economic, environmental, and social forces affecting the industry, and define how your business will create a meaningful impact. The project culminates in a detailed business plan and a professional pitch presentation. Our team conceptualized a multi-functional retail space that redefines shopping as a leisure-driven, immersive experience. The business combines retail, art, hospitality, and creativity into a cohesive environment, offering customers not just products but a curated lifestyle. Retail Store: A curated selection of designer garments (including our own brand), furniture, vintage electronics (e.g., Braun), homeware, and home fragrances. All products are carefully chosen to reflect the aesthetic and values of the brand. Cafe: In collaboration with a local coffee shop, we provide the space while they manage coffee, food, and service operations. Packaging and presentation are designed to align seamlessly with the brand identity. Art Gallery: Integrated throughout the space, with rotating installations curated through collaborations with various artists. Seasonal themes ensure a dynamic and fresh experience for visitors. Creative Space: A hands-on area equipped with materials and tools for DIY crafting projects, guided by professional instructors to foster creativity and ensure high-quality results. Through this concept, we aim to elevate the retail experience by fostering community, creativity, and connection. The fusion of commerce, art, and hospitality transforms shopping into a meaningful, cultural, and enjoyable activity. The assignment develops skills in business identification, market analysis, branding, and professional communication, culminating in a compelling presentation and detailed business report.
